Nucleonic Instrumentation Service (NIS) Team Leader

Location: PO12 2DL, located in Alverstoke (near Lee-On-Solent, Gosport) with free onsite parking.

Package: £47,860 - £56,730 (depending on suitability, qualifications and experience)

Working Pattern: DRPS operates a 10-day working fortnight. We will consider flexible working requests so that your work may fit in with your lifestyle. The successful candidate will be required to attend site regularly due to the nature of the role.

AWE is currently recruiting for a Team Leader within Defence Radiation Protection Services (DRPS), the trusted partner for high-quality radiation science supporting UK Defence and Security.

Based at the Institute of Naval Medicine in Alverstoke, Gosport, the Nucleonic Instrumentation Service (NIS) provides specialist instrumentation, maintenance, calibration, repair and technical support services that underpin Defence radiological monitoring and nuclear emergency response capabilities. The team plays a critical role in maintaining operational readiness and ensuring the availability of specialist radiation detection equipment for customers across Defence.

As the NIS Team Leader, you will lead a multidisciplinary technical team responsible for the delivery of instrumentation support services, technical assurance, capability development and operational outputs. You will be accountable for maintaining a technical capability that delivers critical skills and resources aligned to current and future business requirements.

You will provide effective leadership, coaching and development to your team, ensuring the safe, secure and efficient delivery of work while maintaining the highest standards of technical quality, customer service and regulatory compliance.

The role requires a strong focus on operational delivery, people leadership and continuous improvement. You will work closely with customers, stakeholders and technical specialists to ensure the team remains agile, effective and ready to respond to evolving Defence requirements.

Following appropriate training, there may also be opportunities to participate in elements of the DRPS emergency response and on-call capability.

You will need the ability to work calmly and constructively in a changing environment, balancing technical priorities, people management responsibilities and customer requirements. Initiative, enthusiasm, adaptability and strong leadership skills will be essential to success in this role.

Please note that you must be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 5 years to apply for SC clearance, which is a requirement for this position.

Who are we looking for?

We need you to have the following:

• Degree in a STEM discipline, Leadership and Management qualification, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Experience of successfully leading and developing high-performing technical teams.
• Demonstrable leadership, coaching and people management skills.
• Technical knowledge relevant to instrumentation, engineering, applied science or radiation protection.
• Strategic and tactical planning skills.
• Proven ability to drive delivery, performance and continuous improvement.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
• Competence in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Working appreciation of financial and business management principles.

Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we'd like you to have experience in some of the following:

• Experience working within a regulated technical environment.
• Knowledge of radiation detection instrumentation, calibration, maintenance or quality assurance activities.
